**SUCCESSFUL CASE***
INBTI Vice President and Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office K9 Handler Sgt. Michael Szelc.
On 9-10-2021 a request was made for a K-9 tactical on-lead search for a fugitive with outstanding warrants by Deputy Colbert and the US Marshals. The subject had fled into a wooded area after being confronted by Officers 2 hours prior. Sgt. Michael Szelc and K9 L.E. were deployed in the area where the subject was last seen using flip flops the subject had been wearing. K9 L.E. immediately advanced a track after being presented with the bagged scent article. Several areas of disturbance, including foot prints confirmed the trail progression. The K9 led from a heavily wooded area and along a field edge before attempting to enter thick briar vegetation approximately 1.2 miles from start. The support helicopter from State Police observed the subject directly in front of us in the briars get up and run. Officers providing perimeter cover based off of our location were able to intercept and place the wanted subject into custody. The subject was transported to our jail.
