June 2, 2023. Deputy Larry Crews and K9 Joker with Pittsylvania County Sheriffs Office were deployed in response to a 77 year old male with signs of dementia, last seen 10 hours prior. It was reported the male got on his riding mower and drove it away from his residence on his long gravel driveway. When we arrived on scene many firetrucks and local residents had already arrived and began searching the area. With all of the diesel engines running and people everywhere, it was decided to try and locate the mower first. The mower was located 1/2 mile away behind the residence with the subject not around. The male had taken the mower into a heavily wooded area before getting stuck and walked away further getting lost. Deputy Crews obtained a scent article from within the house and responded to where the mower was found. Joker quickly took to a trail which led through briars and tall pines approx. 1/2 mile before locating the man laying flat on his stomach not moving. As he approached he saw the man slightly move. Rescue had to cut a trail to him to safely remove him from the woods. He was taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. This was Deputy Crews first find with Joker. He has been training hard and is understanding more of TKM with each experience.
