**SUCCESSFUL CASE**

INBTI Vice President and Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office K9 Handler Sgt. Michael Szelc.

On June 2, 2024, we were utilized to attempt to retrace the track of a subject that had committed a homicide. The homicide had occurred 2 days prior. After the homicide occurred the subject left the scene on foot carrying the weapon used in the crime. When he was apprehended a mile away in a wooded area, he did not have the weapon. A bomb/black powder K9 unit was brought in to search with no success. I obtained the jail issued jumpsuit from the subject, who was committed to jail, and placed it in sealed bag to start the trail from.
At the scene, the bagged scent article was presented to LE, she immediately led along the road and into a grass field. Entering a heavily wooded area she continued to pull. Several other Deputies were following, flanking our movements in search of the weapon. Leading through several adjoining properties, for approx. 1/2 mile and exiting onto another roadway, LE crossed over a ditch, when she led up the other side her back left foot landed on and flipped up the gun. The weapon was immediately collected for evidence. To know that after 47 hours, that she went step for step on this subject, shows what all the training Kevin has implemented pays off. We continuously challenge our units, putting different components together at different age and lengths of trails. TKM=SUCCESS.
