**SUCCESSFUL CASE***

INBTI Vice President and Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office K9 Handler Sgt. Michael Szelc

On 10/7/2020 I was dispatched to a call for an accident involving two vehicles. The driver of vehicle 1, who was not licensed, was at the scene when I arrived but informed me that she was not driving when the vehicle crashed. She went on to inform me that the subject who had been driving left the scene on foot into a nearby wooded area. K9 Zwei was deployed, cast around the vehicle before being presented the interior drivers seat. Zwei committed to a trail which led into the woods for approx.. ¼ mile only to return to the scene of the accident. Several people were present on scene from responding Fire Department, Ambulance, State Police, and County Deputies, Zwei continued trailing moving between them only to locate and ID the driver sitting in the back of the ambulance. When questioned again the female admitted to having lied about not driving as she was unlicensed and appeared to be under the influence. She also stated that she did leave the scene and return. A search with a narcotics K9 was then conducted in the area where Zwei trailed, as a result, located narcotics hidden in the woods. The female was charged with possession, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and unlicensed driver. We train for this type of scenario, we were able to close this case thanks to TKM.
